Kentucky started collecting birth and death records in 1852, stopped in 1862, and restarted in 1874. Under legislative mandate, the Office of Vital Statistics began collecting birth records in January 1911. Prior to that date, the county clerk recorded births and deaths and forwarded the records to the state annually.
