Mr. L. C. Draper, ESQ.
Madison, Wisconsin
Dear Sir:
I am proud (?) brother Milton has answered you. I am not acquainted well enough up the Red Lick two miles above B---- Pond to describe the rock where Boone killed the Indian. Hiram Bicknell is the oldest man living there who I refer you to "Standaround" is the post office. Joseph Brandenburg near Booneville, KY can full and completely settle the leap over the cow creek so. His nephew Capt. Joseph Blackwell informs me that ------ Hoy owned the land on the north side of the river up to the mouth of Cow Creek my sister has it confused in her mind about Jones (?) Hoy in that way. How Ailcy Easter got Fowler in to it I don't know precisely. Capt. Blackwell sayes he has been shown the place where Lackey made the leap; it is 15 to 20 ft high-the River is 80 to 90 yds wide at that point. ----it is near 1/2 mile to the River by the creek and between 1/4 to 1/2 mile the nearest point from the "D. B." Tree on Miller's over the road - more reliable information. There was a buffalo lick some 2 1/2 or 3 miles below at the Cop---- Lick and one in Bowman's pasture. This tree stood in 30 to 40 yards of the buffalo lick (?) of the --- ----. The tree is still green and living, reddy for inspection. I have saw large beeches than it is though it is an older looking tree as I ever saw to big -----.
Yours truly,
E. P. Benton

The beech tree that E. P. Benton has referance to is correct in my judgement. The Buffaloe Lick is about 4 hundred yards from the tree. I am satisfied that Boone must have cut his name on it for it is cut on the North side of the tree and with a sharp kinfe and looks auld and ancient.
Yours very respectley,
Achilles Kelley (continuation of p. 40, as written)
