Boone on Station Camp- Fowler's Leap at Cow Creek
Boone Tree at Sturgeon Creek

Miller's Creek, Estill Co., KY April 4, 1885

Dr Sir:

My best information I can get is that it was Boone that killed the Indian in the Red Lick Fork of Station Camp Creek. I think there is no mistake in it.

As to the cliff of rocks above the mouth of Cow Creek, as before stated, they are there. It was not Boone who made his escape from the Indians by jumping over the cliff; but a kinsman of mine of the name of Fowler. He was hunting on Mount Scratchem near by- was shot through by an Indian- ran with his gun in his hand putting his hand over the bullet hole and jumped over the cliff into the river, holding to his gun, and swimming the river, the Indians shooting at him while crossing. He was one of the early settler at Boonesboro, and no doubt fought with Boone in many an Indian battle.

The beech tree at the mouth of Sturgeon Creek is dead, and the bark not dropped off, when I saw it. My best recollection is, that it was then hard to decide as to the date. It was 1770- or seventy somewhere. I tried to get the exact date to report to the county but failed. The Brandenburgs ought to know, as they were raised there.

My brother, Milton Benton, Effingham, Kansas, ought to answer you. My sister, Diana Park, lives at my father's old farm on Red Lick, their several years my junior- only two years brother Milton's junior. Write her and if she can't reply, have her come to me or brother James to write for her. I am trying to recover my losses during the war- can't go see everyone I think of, and cause delay in my ------.

Yours,
E. P. Benton

Dr Sir: Absence from home and neglect of my family to mail my letters causes delay in getting replies to you.
The beech tree you mention at the mouth of Rosses' Creek was gone when I began surveying in 1871. I have heard it spoken of G. B. Kelley is a good reference as I know of--his P.O. Miller's Creek.
Perhaps Wm. Tinckler, Sr., Beattyville, or Proctor, Lee County, KY. Could tell you something of it…he is better known as Fiddler Bill. As there are several Wm. Tincklers, you had better direct to him as Fiddler Bill Tinckler. If living, he is very old.

Yours truly,
E. P. Benton
