The 57th county
formed after Kentucky became a state in
1792, was taken from south-eastern
portions of
Warren Co., KY,
and
south-western portions of Barren Co., KY,
on January 11,
1815. Allen County was named in honor of
Colonel John Allen, a brave Kentuckian
who died in the Battle of River Raisin,
MI. It is located in
the
Pennyrile
region of the state. The elevation in the
county ranges from 445 to 966 feet above
sea level. In 2000 the county population
was 17,800 in a land area of 346.12
square miles, an average of 51.4 people
per square mile. The county seat is
Scottsville.
and was settled about 1797, beginning as
a stop on the stage route south of
Louisville.
The town was established in 1816 and
named for Charles Scott, a former
governor of Kentucky. The Allen Court
House or Scottsville post office opened
in 1816. The population in 1990 was
4,278.
