John Hedden |
Shelby News 14 April, 1889 |
Mr.
John Hedden, one of Southville's old and highly respected
citizens, died suddenly at his residence in that place, last Friday
evening about 7:00 o'clock. Up to the time of his death, Mr. Hedden
had been in the enjoyment of excellent health. Just before going
into his supper he had been weighing some cattle and joking with his
neighbors, and seemed to be in unusually fine spirits. He ate a
hearty supper, and pushing his chair back from the table, fell to the
floor, dead, without a moments warning. Heart disease is
supposed to have been the cause of his death. Mr. Hedden was born in
the neighborhood, where he died, September 9, 1824, and on arriving at
the age of manhood engaged in the mercantile business, which he
followed up to the time of his death. He was a member of Salem
Church, and a man of correct habits and unapproachable character, well
liked by everyone.
His funeral took place at Salem Church at 10 o'clock, Sunday
morning and was very largely attended by his relatives, neighbors and
friends. The remains were buried in the church yard.

Sister Elizabeth P. McClain
|
Published Thursday 27
May 1886, Shelby Sentinel
|
Sister Elizabeth P. McClain, wife of Jacob
McClain, died of paralysis at her home, near Shelbyville, Shelby
county, May 16, 1886, in the sixty-eighth year of her age. She was
baptized, when quite young, into the fellowship of Buck Creek Baptist
Church, Shelby county, by Brother George Waller. Was married December
11, 1842, and the following year brought her letter to Salem Church,
where she lived a consistent Christian life; but the hand of disease
was laid heavily upon her and her sufferings were very great for
several months before she died, and she seemed anxious to get to that
rest prepared for the people of God. She was a faithful and loving
wife, a kind and devoted mother and a good neighbor. No mother ever
had a more devoted family of children, who night and day anxiously
anticipated every want. She leaves an aged husband, one son, and three
daughters to mourn her departure, but they mourn not as those who have
no hope.
Funeral services were held at Salem
Church, conducted by Rev. J. A. French, who beautifully expounded the
text, “Though we walk through the valley and the shadow of death, we
will fear no evil.” May the Lord sanctify this dispensation of His
providence to the good of all the family, and may they, in a full
faith in Christ, meet her in the bright beyond.
