Mattie Taylor Thorpe, 98, of Berea Health Care Center, formerly of Emporia, Va.,
and a resident of the Laurels and the Harlan Nursing Home, died Saturday, Aug.
28, 2004, at the Berea Health Care Center.
She was born Sept. 21, 1905, in Brunswick County, Va. Mrs. Thorpe was a graduate
of Lawrenceville High School in Brunswick County, Va., and she attended State
Teachers College in Farmville, Va. Mrs. Thorpe taught school briefly before
becoming a homemaker. She was also a member of St. Andrews United Methodist
Church in Emporia, Va.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Miles Montgomery and Harriet "Hattie"
Pearson Taylor; husband, Clarence Moore Thorpe Sr.; two sons, Clarence M. Thorpe
Jr. and Harry Alexander Thorpe; one son-in-law, Charles Harris; one grandson,
Charles "Baylor" Harris and four sisters and two brothers.
Survivors include a daughter, Winona Thorpe Harris of Richmond; one
daughter-in-law, Mary Smith Thorpe of Ashland, Ore.; four grandchildren, Dr.
Steven David (Penny) Thorpe of Ashland, Ore., Jo Ellen (Dan) Thorpe Eppink of
Sugar Land, Texas, Teresa Harris (Sam) Metcalfe of Richmond, Charles Bradford
(Deborah) Harris of Corbin; six great-grandchildren. Several nieces, nephews,
relatives and friends also survive.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Greensville
Memorial Cemetery in Emporia, Va.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Andrews United Methodist
Church, C/O Polly Wray, 1603 Walnut Dr., Emporia, Va. 23847 or to a charity of
your choice.
Pallbearers will be J. Sherwood Howell Jr., Dr. Steven D. Thorpe, Myles T.
Davis, Charles Bradford Harris, Larry Conwell, John F. Koonce and Donald Koonce.
Honorary pallbearers will be Thomas Herbert Wrenn, Samuel B. Metcalfe, Dan
Eppink, Harry Taylor, James Parker and A. Earl Taylor.
Mount Pleasant Funeral Home of Harlan is in charge of arrangements.
