Richard G. Chrisman,
94, died peacefully on May 29, 2004 at his home in Huntington, WV. He was a
native of Madison County, Ky. Just prior to moving to Huntington in his later
years he resided in Lexington, Ky. He was the son of Calvin and Jenny Jones
Chrisman and was also preceded in death by his sister Hazel Chrisman who was an
English professor at Eastern Kentucky State University in Richmond. Mr Chrisman
was a member of Central Christian Church in Huntington and formerly of First
Christian Church in Richmond. Graveside services will be held Friday June 4,
2004 at 1:30pm at the Richmond Cemetery. Turpin Funeral Home in charge of
arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the family c/o Turpin
Funeral Home, 237 North Second, Street, Richmond, KY 40475 and will be given to
the two Christian Churches where he was a member.
Mr. Chrisman was
an alum of Berea College where he excelled in track and basketball and
also an alum of University of Kentucky and University of Chicago.He
worked for the War Manpower Commission and taught navy men during WW II.
He was a professor of economics at Elmhurst College in Illinois,
Carnegie Melon University in Pittsburg, Roosevelt University in Chicago,
University of Denver and most recently at Eastern Kentucky State
University in Richmond. After retiring from Eastern he went to
University of Kentucky Law School where he received his Doctor of
Jurisprudence degree and then opened a law practice in Lexington. He
later taught for the Marine Corps in Yuma, Arizona. He was a member of
the Kentucky Bar Association, the Kentucky Retired Teachers Association
and was a Kentucky Colonel. In addition to his academic pursuits he was
a published poet and a lover of nature.
He was a devoted
husband of 58 years to Virginia Staker Chrisman who survived him. He was
a loving and supportive father and grandfather to Karla Chrisman and
Erika Chrisman-Mortyn who also survived him. In addition, he was
survived by his two brothers-in-law, Don Staker (Patsy) and Bob Staker
(Sue). The Chrisman Family would like to thank all the ladies who took
such good care of Richard in the last weeks of his life especially
Dretta LeMaster, Janice Perdue, Faye Burns and Nancy Fulks. Richard will
be greatly missed and remembered for his tender heart, noble character,
endearing eccentricities and his love of God.
