James
Bartlett Cain age 77 of White Station Road and a life-long resident of
Berea, departed this life on June 28, 2004. He was a WWII veteran, a
strong believer in the power of Jesus Christ, and a cherished husband
and father. He is survived by his faithful wife, Jean Bowling Cain, and
his devoted children, Bart (Diane) Cain and Sandie (James) Cain Witt,
and his grandchildren, Kelly (Chris) Brown, John Marion Witt, Carmen
(Ben) Richardson all of Madison County, and Jason (Shannon) Cain of
Jacksonville, Florida. He will also be missed by his great grandchildren
Justin and Sarah Richardson, Carson Brown and Colin Bartlett Cain.
Also mourning
his loss are his sisters Mary Wilson, Sarah Eaton, Joyce Johnson,
Marcella Hembree, Jurene Burdette and Opal McClure all of Madison County
and Lizzie Harrison of Ohio. Their prayers and love have comforted him
during his illness.
Bart was the
son of James Marion and Lottie Powell Cain. In addition to his parents
he was preceded in death by his sisters Betty Cain Harris of Ohio and
Oma Cain Durham of Berea, two half brothers, Logan and Malcom Cain and
his brothers-in-law Joe Durham, Raymond Wilson, Forest Eaton, Roy
Harrison, Charlie Johnson, Paul Hembree, Bill Burdette and Jimmy McClure
all of whom were his closest friends.
Being the
only son of Marion and Lottie, and the brother of nine sisters, Bart was
the center of all attention during his youth. When he went to the Army
in 1945, his mother still kept his place at the kitchen table and never
allowed his sisters to sit in his chair. With the money he sent home,
his parents bought property on Slate Lick Rd. where they lived many
years. During the early years of his marriage to Jean, Bart carried the
mail from the Berea Post Office to Clay Co., Kentucky, a position that
allowed him to befriend the many people he met through his mail route.
Following that, he managed Texaco and Shell service stations in Berea.
He was retired from Gibson Greeting Card Company, where he was
maintenance supervisor.
He loved his
family deeply and set an example of generosity and good will for all to
emulate. Steeped in the values of past generations, he still believed
that a man’s word was his bond. The memories of his wisdom, his
perseverance, his faith and his unconditional love, along with his
passion for horses and Western movies, will comfort his loved ones in
their loss.
Pallbearers
will be his grandsons and his nephews. Honorary pallbearers are his
friends Ed Alcorn, Tom Baker, Vernon Cummins, Gilbert Harrison, Charles
Harrison, Bob Johnston and Ellen Johnston.
Services will
be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Thursday at Lakes Funeral Home in Berea with
his nephew Rev. Elby Harrison officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday
evening after 6:00 p.m.
The family
would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Berea
Hospital and Dr. Shazia Shamim for her tender care and counsel. We are
especially indebted to the nurses of the ICU, who watched over us like
family and sheltered us with their kindness.
