THOMPSON / BROWN /
HOLLAND
I am trying to discover my g-grandfather THOMPSON'S
first name, his occupation, what happened to him, etc. My grandfather
and his mother were very "closed mouthed" about this part of their lives.
This is what I have been told, and what my father was able to uncover
before he died:
Mr. THOMPSON was born in Tennessee. He apparently moved to Kentucky and
later married (supposedly) MARY ALICE "MOLLIE" BROWN. They had 2
children: a daughter, Myrtle (b. 1/30/1885), and a son, Leroy Douglass
Thompson (b. 10/13/1887 in Eddyville, KY).
Myrtle married, but we do not know her spouse's name. There was a
son, Frank Thompson ______, & he died in Ohio at age 30.
"Lee" Thompson is my grandfather.
The family knows more about "Mollie" than Mr. Thompson. She was born
April 6, 1862, in Ohio & had two sisters (there may have been more
siblings, but we only know of Jenny (b. 1873) and Nancy / "Nan"). The
family relocated from Ohio to Eddyville, KY; this is where the girls grew
up.
Jenny BROWN married John R. HOLLAND in Eddyville in 1896; they moved to
Alabama the following year, and then to Nova Scotia (according to "family
legend"!). She moved to Memphis, TN about 1929 and died there in 1941.
Nancy "Nan" BROWN married an employee of the Dole Pineapple Company and
(supposedly) moved to Hawaii. I know nothing else about her.
Mary Alice "Mollie" Brown married a second time in 1895 to Charles
Campbell; they had 2 sons, Ralph, (b. 11/20/1896 in Arkansas) & Lloyd (b.
10/14/1902 - he apparently died very young.) Charles Campbell died in
1903 & is buried in Tennessee.
"Mollie" BROWN THOMPSON CAMPBELL moved with her two sons to Memphis, TN
in 1908. She died there on September 24, 1943.
If anyone has information regarding any of these individuals, I would
certainly appreciate hearing from you! I am totally at my wits end, and
do not know where else to search.
Email address: wrightstuff6888@yahoo.com
Thank you!

lumber industry
My Kilby grandparents of Ashe County, North Carolina, migrated to
Eddyville, KY, in 1892 with their first two children. Grandpa worked
cutting timber while there. The family (with three more children) had
returned to their home county (in a horse-drawn wagon) by 1898 where
Grandpa resumed farming. I am curious about his motivation for making
that move west. Was there large-scale lumbering in the area during the
last decade of the 19th century that might have advertised for workers in
the eastern states? Any thoughts about how Eddyville might have been
known in the mountains of western North Carolina at that time would be
most appreciated.

I am
seeking the name of a company in a nearby area to re-erect a gravestone
which has fallen over in Dry Fork Creek Cemetery. This cemetery was once
in Caldwell County before county boundries were changed. It is not on the
web site's list. It is about 2 and 1/2 miles south of Lamasco. at a side
road going west, marked "Dry Fork Creek". The cemetery is about a half to
one mile OFF of 93. I will appreciate any help I can get.The stone is for
Sarah and John McGregor, the daughter and son-in law of my Great-great
grandfather and mother Levi and Alcy (Kilgore) Jones who are buried
nearby. They died in 1882.

ADAMS
There is a
T.J.Adams buried in the Kuttawa Park Cemetery. The tombstone indicates
that he was born 16 Dec 1843, died 9 Nov 1897. I believe that this could
be my great-grandfather, Thomas J. Adams, although he would have been
born before 1843. His daughter, Sallie Adams, married John Rothrock in
Confederate 16 May 1883 and I believe Thomas Adams was at that time
superintendent of the Tennessee Rolling Mill. His wife was Annie Adams
and there is also an Annie Adams buried in the cemetery according to the
publication "Lyon County Cemeteries." A friend who recently visited the
cemetery noted that there were artifical flowers on the T.J. Adams grave.
Does anyone know for sure who is buried in this grave?

LAKE
In May of 1926 Mr Edward Lake was executed by the electric chair, for the
murder of his wife Matha, & her lover in July of 1924 in Spencer county,I
believe in Jefferson. I have found both their deaths in the state death
index. I'm researching the story for the grandson. Was there a prison
that the execution took place at in Lyons county? If so is it still
there? I will be getting copies of death certs. I was wondering if
perhaps Mr. Lake was buried in a cemetey near the prison. I have also
requested info from the library in Jefferson for copies of old newspaper
articles of the murder & any trial info. Any additional information would
be greatly appreciated. Also, if any way possible to get trial
transcripts from the court house? If possible please supply and address.

PETTY
My great-grandmother was Lily Mae McVay Blair, born at/near Kuttawa
around 1889. Parents were Julia and William McVay. Looking for more
information on William, who died around 1900, as Julia is a widow with
four children in the 1900 Lyon County census, keeping house for her
father, Shad Owens (according to census) or Allen Shadowen (according to
Julia's 1941 death certificate). Research on the McVay line deadends
here because of the lack of 1890 census. Also interested in
contact/information on any of Julia's other descendants there through her
children, sons Lee McVay and Wilson McVay, daughter Esther McVay ?, and
daughter by second marriage to William H. Petty, Lucy Petty.
