The Ed Massey House is sometimes also know as the Benjamin Barner House.
The home is built around an original log block house, which later was covered
with weatherboards and even later bricked. In one corner of the log blockhouse
is a closet with a latch in the inside of the door and a trap door above a
tunnel that appears to have at one time led down by the river to the Gower
House. It is believed to have been a part of the Underground Railroad a stop in
the route of slaves escaping to the north.
It is believed to be one of the oldest homes in Smithland.
