Mears a special examiner of the Bureau of Pensions, personally appeared JOHN MUNCY Claimant, who, being by me first duly requested to answer truly all interrogatories propounded to him during this special examination of aforesaid claim for pension, deposes and says: That his age is 57; that his business has been and is farming; and his post office address is Coon Creek, Leslie County, Kentucky Q. When did you go into the Army? A. My discharge says the 19th day of August 1863, but I really enlisted on the 9th day of August 1863 Q. What injuries did you receive during your service? A. I enlisted near Irvine, Estill County, Kentucky. I never knew of anything being the matter until after I was captured at- near Cynthiana, Kentucky in June 1864; there was never anything wrong with me to account to anything until after that Q. What happened then or about that time? A. I was captured by Morgan’s men, and was run off by them for about twenty miles; and was run through the water and was very much warmed up and never been well since Q. How did that run affect you? A. Well it seemed that my legs were bad all along after that- with pains and rheumatism; I never made much complaint about it as you say; Q. What other disabilities did you receive in the Army? A. I have had the piles ever since I came home; I had twenty days furlough; and came home after that run and my legs were swollen up and I have had trouble with the piles ever since Q. Where did you first notice that you had anything like the scurvy? A. I think that it was in 1864; I did not know anything about what it was until an old man told me that it was scurvy Q. Did you contract the rheumatism and piles and scurvy while you were in the army? A. Yes sir; I don’t know just what to call the diseases, but I have been troubled with it ever since I came from the army Q. About the time that you were captured by Morgan’s men did you have any trouble with the piles? A. No sir not until just afterwards Q. How did it trouble you after that? A. I never reported myself sick; and never was excused from duty Q. How did your legs appear when you came home on the furlough after you were captured by Morgan’s men? A. They were badly swollen and were very read and inflamed- and now my piles affect me the same way and burn so that I can hardly stand it Q. Were you in any way affected by the scurvy in the army? A. Sometimes my teeth would get sore and it would seem as if they were everyone loose Q. Had you ever felt anything of these pains before you went into the army? A. No sir; not anything of any of them Q. Were you troubled with rheumatism; piles and scurvy or Erysipelas- at the time you were discharged? A. Yes sir; I had the same pains I have now Q. When were you discharged? A. I was discharged the 26th day of December 1864 Q. Where did you come to after you were discharged? A. I came back into the same settlement where I have lived ever since Q. What did you do when you first came out of the army? A. I did not do very much that winter except to get wood; I have not been able to work much but I have worked some; I have thought at times I was not able to do anything- and again I feel as though I could do something; I think that for about half my time since I came out of the army I have not been able to work; I have not been down hard sick but have been in a heap of misery Q. What doctors have you consulted about your case? A. I consulted a man by the name of Hobbs who is now dead; and a man by the name of Dr. Price who lives in Missouri; I was also treated by a man of the name of Vernon- Carter County, Kentucky near Olive Hill; they say he is now dead Q. Were you ever treated by any of the surgeons of your Regiment? A. No sir; Dr. Glass made me some mouth water when we were at Lexington, Kentucky; before we were discharged after our time was out Q. Have you been troubled with the Erysipelas ever since you came from the army? A. Yes sir all the time; I never had the toothache until I came from the army Q. Were you ever in any other service except that you have spoken of? A. No sir; I was never in any except in Company C, 47th Kentucky Infantry; I bush whacked some before I went into the army John Muncy Subscribed before me this 4th day of May, 1885, and I certify that the contents were fully made known to deponent before signing L H Mears DEPOSITION “B” Case of JOHN MUNCY, No. 319808 On this13th day of May, 1885, at Cutshin, County of Leslie, State of Kentucky, before me, L.H. His pulse rate is 72 per minute; his respiration 18; his temperature normal; his height is 5 feet 9 inches; he weighs 219 pounds, and states that he is 57 years of age. Touching the cause of the disability for which he claims a pension, he makes the following statement: He states that he is affected with something like rheumatic pains in his limbs and joints. Does not think any of his joints swell to any extent, states that at times he has what is called piles, but no bloody discharge The examination reveals the following objective facts in support of his statements: Claimant is burdened with a super abundance of adipose tissue. His complaints of pain are similar to all persons of excessive obesity- hence no rating. On examination of anal orifice shows it to be foul and *? Clothes much soiled. Some small piles the largest not larger than a cherry- If proof showed continuance from date of discharge I would rate now ¼ disability From existing condition and the history of this claimant, as stated by himself, it is, in my judgment, probable that the disability was incurred in the service as he claims, and that it has not been aggravated or prolonged by vicious habits. He is, in my opinion, entitled to a ¼ rating for the disability caused by piles, the sum of which aggregates 11 total, no other disabilities discovered Manning Examining Surgeon GENERAL AFFIDAVIT State of Kentucky, County of Leslie In claim No. 319808 of JOHN MUNCY of Company C of the 47 Regiment of Kentucky Volunteers, personally appeared before the undersigned duly authorized to administer oaths within the said County, WILLIAM BAKER, aged 60 years, whose P.O. is Hazard, County of Perry, State of Kentucky, who being duly sworn, states in relation to said claim as follows: Says that he was Second Lieutenant of said Company C of the 47th Regiment of Kentucky Volunteers and belonged to the same organization that said claimant did and served with him in the late War of the Rebellion. Says that he personally knew claimant for at least twenty years at and prior to his enlistment, he had the appearance of a sound and healthy man prior to his enlistment. In about June 1864 I heard him complaining of scurvy. I also heard him complain of said disability up to the time we were mustered out of said service. In the latter part of the summer and fall of 1864 I heard him complain of piles he continually complained of piles until we were mustered out of said service. About the 10th of December 1864 he was apparently very lame and bad off with rheumatism. I have saw him occasionally since the war and have lived from about 8 to 20 miles each year since the war to the present and he has continually complained with said disabilities and is now complaining very bad and not able to perform any manual labor at all and if there had been such a disability that existed at and prior to his enlistment I would have known it. He was then to all appearance an extra stout, healthy looking man and did his duty well. The first time I ever knew or heard of anything ailing him was in June 1864. We were in a fight with the rebels at or near Cynthiana, Kentucky. I think it was the 11th of June. Muncy was captured with a good portion of the Company. Myself and a few of the boys made our escape and went to the Ohio and down it to Covington and in a day or so the captured boys came to Covington. The next day after Muncy came back, I and him got a pass and went to the battle ground to hunt Muncy’s pocket book where he had laid it down to keep it from falling in to the rebels hands. While we was on the battle field Muncy said he had something the matter with him and got me to look and see what it was. His anus or lower bowel had two knots or tumors on it as large as the end of my thumb. I told him I thought it piles. He continued to complain of it till we were mustered out.
