“Revolutionary
Soldiers
(This
is the second in a series of articles on Revolutionary War Veterans who settled
in Eastern Kentucky Counties.)
“STAPLETON
– Thomas Stapleton made application in Clay County, Kentucky for a pension on
his service in the Revolutionary War.
He stated his age then 75 years, and that he entered the service of the
Revolution while a resident of Rowan County, North Carolina, in June 1780,
serving under Captain Thomas Cowin in the Regiment of Colonel Loch. He further stated that in 1781 or 1782,
while living in Russell county, Virginia, he again entered the service, serving
under Captain William Martin. In
support of Thomas Stapleton’s application for a pension, depositions were made
by Rev. Elisha W. Bowman and Rev. Daniel Duff, as regards to his character,
etc. Depositions were made by Edward
Stapleton, son of Thomas Stapleton, in Owsley County, Ky., by Joshua Stapleton,
brother of Thomas, in Johnson County, Ky.,; by Robert Baker, age 79, in Owsley
County, Ky., by Abel Pennington, of Owsley County, Kentucky, and by John
Combs. Thomas Stapleton died on
November 15, 1835. His widow, Sarah
Stapleton, made application for a widow’s pension, in October, 1783 [probably
1838]; that her maiden name was Sarah Johnson; their children’s names
Edward Stapleton and William Stapleton.
“BAKER
- Bolin (or Bowling) Baker, while a citizen of Clay County, Kentucky, made
application on Oct. 22, 1832, for a soldier’s pension on his service in the
Revolutionary War; he stated that he was then 69 years of age; that he enlisted
under Captain Patrick, while living in Wilkes County, North Carolina; when he
enlisted was some months over 16 years of age; that was in June 1780; that,
again, in 1783, he entered the service in Washington County, North
Carolina. Supporting application were
affidavits of Rev. Elisha Bowman and William Morris.
“MEADOWS
– Israel Meadows, while residing in Estill County, Kentucky, made application,
Sept. 22, 1818, for a pension on his service in the American Revolution, with
the Virginia troops. He stated that he
enlisted at Sweet Springs, Va., in 1776, under Captain Arbuckle in the 12th
Virginia Regiment. Israel Meadows died
on Sept. 30, 1827. Barbara Meadows,
widow of Israel, made application on Oct. 5, 1838, for a widow’s pension. She stated that she and her husband resided
in Greenbriar County, Virginia, before coming to Kentucky, settling first in
Madison County, removing later to Estill County. That they were the parents of 10 children. Affidavit was made by Mrs. Elizabeth Cole,
daughter of Israel Meadows; she mentioned two brothers, Jacob Meadows and
William Meadows. Affidavit of Izabella
Howard, age 84, resident of Montgomery County, Kentucky, stated that she was
acquainted with Israel and Barbara Meadows, while living in Greenbriar County,
Virginia. Affidavit of Gordon Griffin,
age 85, resident of Bath County, Ky., stated that Israel and Barbara Meadows
were married in Greenbriar County, Virginia.
“STIDHAM
– Samuel Stidham, while residing in Perry County, Kentucky, made application on
Dec. 10, 1832, for a soldier’s pension, stating his age then as 85; that he
entered service under Capt. James Giddens, in Surry County, North Carolina;
served a number of terms. Stephen
Cordel made oath that he was present with Samuel Stidham in the same
company. Samuel Stidham was pensioned
Jan. 19, 1833, on roll from Mar. 4, 1831.”
