I later
retrieved her death
certificate which included
exactly what Dana had put on

signed her name at age 13
years.

Vanranselaer (not sure if this

Bland.
His Record of Death & all census
that I have say he was born in
Ky.......I have his Record of
Marriage.....to Elizabeth Ann
Bland January 6, 1847 in
Jefferson Co., Ky. I have a
birthdate (I'm not sure of) May
28, 1827.
General Vanranselaer Bland
Born May 28, 1827 in ?, Ky.
Died Dec. 5, 1904 in
Mendon, St. Joseph, Michigan
Married Elizabeth Ann Bland Jan.
6, 1847 in Jefferson Co., Ky.
I have traced him from Ky. to
Posey Twp. Washington Co., Ind.
where he bought land.
Also in the Ind. property papers
I have it shows a American Bland
buying land 10 yrs. before
General. Generals' land is right
next to Americas' as well as a
Matilda Bland....her name is on
the Record of Marriage as Mother
to both General &
Elizabeth....???? raises a lot

Kentucky. My earliest
maternal ancestors are
Garland and Rose Johnston
Winston circa 1820. Their

daughters married Porters,
and their descendants are
still living in the Paris
and Lexington areas. In fact
on August 14 of this year, I
gave a family history
presentation at our reunion
in Paris. I have some
documentation (i.e
marriage bonds, death
certificates, wills and some
pictures). For a few years

break through that
brickwall that

the slave issue. The "griots"
in my family said that
Daniel was a slave who

I am looking for any descendants of
the COMMODORE family. We have a
little information that dates back
to approximately 1870, but nothing
before then. I originally thought
our family began here, but according
to the 1880 census, I think I'm
wrong. Maysville, KENTUCKY was the
end of the slavery side on the
Underground Railroad in North
Central KENTUCKY. It's just across
the river from Ripley, OHIO. I'm
unsure if our family was here before
or after slavery. I am so anxious
to contact any and all persons who
may be related to me. I have a
cousin who was able to do some
research and her information states
that our GGrandparents were John and
Delia COMMODORE and they had
approximately seven children. Our
grandparents were Lewis and Bertha
PAYNE COMMODORE. If you have any
information that will be able to
assist us in our search it would be
greatly appreciated. Also, all most
every COMMODORE listed in the 1880
census was listed as Black. There
were a few Mulattos and very few
White; however, in the search of our
surname we have found that the name
COMMODORE is English.

Surnames: Tolliver, Tolbert
Counties Researching: Jefferson
I am looking for the family of Jesse
Tolliver b. July 20, 1907, probably
in/near Louisville. I find him in
the 1920 census as a 12 y/o residing
at the Louisville Industrial School
of Reform. (According to family
members, he had been placed there by
his father after the death of his
mother, when he was about 9). I have
been told by Jesse's granddaughter
that she had heard at one time that
the family name "used to be
Talbert/Tolbert/Talbott" and while I
can't locate a Jesse Tolliver in the
1910 Census I do find a Jesse
Tolbert, age 2, son of David
Tolbert 48 and Susan 36 in
Fisherville. Both David and Susan
are enumerated as having been born
in KY. Unfortunately, I can't find
David in any other census. If the
age given in the 1910 census is
correct, he would have been born
approx. 1861, so it's quite possible
he was born in slavery. I have
absolutely no idea when or where he
died, and I can't find a death
record for a Susan Tolbert between
1907 and 1920.
Does anyone have any ideas where I
should look next?

Angeline Harris lived in Hartford,

Perhaps her DOB is 1834-1835. The
census of the same year lists her
children as Mathew, Arther, Even,
Sanford, Annis (or Veniece), and
Delia (or Lelar,Lelia). They were
also listed as white. Maybe they
were "passing" since the children
and their mother both were products
of owner/slave relationships.
Perhaps Mathew and Arther worked as
RR (railroad?) hands? The census of
1880 for Owensboro, Kentucky,
Daviess county lists the family as
Mulatto. Her children in the

Hugh, Sanford, Annis and Delia. My
