Jim Boy Proctor
This is the story of Jim Boy Proctor,
as written by Margaret Susan (Ball) Proctor. Margaret (b.
1901) was a native of Corydon, KY and married Roger
Dixon Proctor of Corydon. Roger Proctor was the son
of Tom Proctor and Anna Laura (Dixon) Proctor.
In the story, Margaret mentions Tom
riding to his grandparents' home and bringing back a
small boy. She doesn't mention which set of
grandparents he visited, but there are two
clues: George Proctor's farm in Waverly was built on
Buckman land. According to Margaret Ball Proctor,
their plantation house was in Waverly and they owned
2200 acres of land. The house was built in 1854 of
brick made from Union County clay. A row of
servants' cabins was behind the house and 25
spinning wheels were in the attic from a time when
everything was made on site. This would have been
the closest farm.
Secondly, on Jim-Boy's death
certificate, he listed Matilda Buckman as his
mother, an indication that she came from this farm
rather than a Proctor farm.
Tom Proctor's grandparents were
William Proctor & Margaret (Payne) Proctor from
Union County and Clement Mudd Buckman & Anna
Isabella (Greenwell) Buckman. Anna was the daughter
of Louis Greenwell. George N Proctor, father of
Thomas Buckman Proctor, lived on Greenwell's land.
Other family names that Margaret Ball
traced were: Ball, Proctor, Dixon, Yarbrough,
Turner, Ashby, Clay, Talbott, & Wilson. Many of
these were slave owners in NE Kentucky.

According to the 1880 census Jim Boy
Proctor was living in the home of George N. Proctor and
his family, which included his son Thomas. At the
taking of the 1900 census, Jim Boy is now referred to as
Jim Boy Powell. No census records for 1910 and
1920 has been located for Jim Boy Powell or Proctor.
At the taking of the 1910 census, Thomas Proctor, wife
Anna and son Roger are living in Union County. By
1920, Roger Proctor has married and is then living in
Corydon, Henderson County. Per the death
certificate of Jim Boy Powell, he died in 1926 Waverly,
Union County. He is listed as married, but no
wife's name is listed. His parents are listed as
Thomas Powell, born Henderson Co. & Matilda Buckman,
born Union Co.. The first name of the
informant is illegible, it appears to read Mrs. Iris
Thomas, but no record of an Iris Thomas in Waverly,
Union Count can be located.
