Note:  Microfilm includes application of J.N. Blue of Marion, Crittenden Co., KY, for compensation for service of his slave, Willie Baldwin.  The form states that Blue was the lawful owner of Baldwin and “that he purchased him from James S. Baldwin in January 1860, that at the time of his purchase he received a bill of sale for said slave, which has been lost or mislaid and cannot now be filed.”  Attested by R.W. Wilson & D.N. Stinson.  Blue signed oath of allegiance to the Union on 15 January 1867.

Note:  Soldier took the place of Dr. Chas. McKay, his owner.

 

Soldier’s Name:  Bigham, Simon

Company:  Co. K

Note:  Records state that the soldier owed service to Cubb Bigham, credited to Crittenden Co., KY.  File included application of Mrs. Lucinda Bigham for compensation for slave, filed 30 January 1867.  Bigham stated that she owned the slave “by inheritance from her mother Mrs. Sarah E. Linthicum.”

Note:  file stated that soldier was the property of J.W. Blue, Crittenden Co., KY.  Blue filed application for compensation for slave on 10 January 1867.  “That his wife Fanny M. Blue inherited said slave from her father’s estate (S.D. Baldwin) in 1837 [Date can’t be right as Benjamin was born circa 1846.]

“Died on board steamer Daniel Webster at sea June 15, 1865. His final statement was forwarded to Adgt General’s office from St. Phillips, June 22, 1865.” “Died of disease.” [Later report says ulceration of the bowels.]

Note:  Soldier was present on all muster rolls except May-June 1865, when he was “sent to hospital at New Orleans, LA, June 20, 1865.”  On the Hospital Muster Roll of the Corps d’Afrique USA Gen. Hospital. Returned to duty 25 August 1865

Remarks: Was in the battle of Paducah, KY, 25 March 1864. Was in the skirmish on the Cumberland River, June 1864. Promoted to corporal [later service record says 7th corporal].
