The Kentuckian Citizen  Tues July 18, 1944

Paris Fireman recovered the body of John Gaines, 15 year old negro, Chapel St., at 11 0'clock last night from Stoner creek near the old mill of East Main Street after a search had been begun when clothing, identified by relatives of the youth, was found earlier in the day in the fork of the tree near the scene of the drowning.

Using grappling hook, Vernon Baber,  and J.C. Frye, Paris fireman, recovered the body six hours after Pat Ray reported to police that he had found the clothing.  Mr. Ray first saw it at 10 o'clock yesterday morning and reported the incident when the clothes were still there at 4:30 P.M.

Mary Gaines, 22, and Anette Gaines, 20, sisters of the youth reported that their brother, who had been attending summer sessions of the Western High School here, left home at 8 A.M. and yesterday, presumably to attend his classes.

These sisters, alarmed at their brother's continued absence from home identified the clothes when they called at the police station to report his disappearance.

Coroner Roxie Davis, who with the Deputy Coroner Fred Link made an investigation, stated that an inquest was not necessary.
