Barren County Biography-
William Murrell
Newspaper article by the late Paul Holman Jr, 15 Apr 1992: Photo
of William Murrell. “Nearby a picture of William Murrell, who died
about 1909, who was once a slave on the Edmunds farm, Long-lived, he
was supposed to have fathered some 100 children. The legend goes
that he was hanged three times by the Northern Army during the Civil
War on land now owned by Chris Edmunds. He survived all three
hanging attempts but never gave the Yankees the information they
sought. A beloved man of his community, one of his grandsons still
lives near Beckton.
“They pulled him up on a limb three times, each time
they would let him down. He would not tell them anything.”
