“Within three miles of Glasgow resides a colored woman, named Lucinda Everett, whose record in child-bearing is certainly remarkable. At the age of eleven years and ten months she became a mother, and at the age of twenty-three she had nine children, eight of whom are now living. The statements above can be implicitly trusted as the record of her age, and the birth of the first child were accurately recorded and reported in the medical journals of the country at the time of the remarkable event. The story in its whole connection is so well authenticated that there can be no doubt of the entire accuracy. There are a number of intelligent and trustworthy witnesses in the neighborhood who are perfectly familiar with the woman’s history from her birth to the present day. The fact of her becoming a mother before she had reached twelve years of age, coupled with the additional fact of being the mother of nine children in the brief period of twelve years, makes it one of the most singular cases on record.”
