Fannie Hurley SMITH
Mrs. Fannie Hurley Smith, 88, of Barbourville, passed away Tuesday morning, Jan. 10, 2006 in the Barbourville Nursing Home. She was a daughter of the late John and Emily Shorter, born on July 13, 1917 in Barbourville. Mrs. Smith was a housekeeper and a member of the Lighthouse Tabernacle. She enjoyed cooking, housekeeping, sewing and quilting.
On April 30, 1938, she united in marriage with Charlie Smith at Green Road and to this union eight children were born. Mr. Smith preceded her in death on Dec. 18, 1981.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Curtis Smith, a grandson, Christopher Wayne Smith; two sisters, Elizabeth Hurley Swanson and Susan Hurley Disney; two brothers, Dan Hurley and Chester Hurley; and three great grandchildren, Michael McKen Gray, Ashley and Amber Shelton. Survivors include her children, Blevin Smith and wife Wilma of Barbourville, Lois Jean Lewis and husband Hobert of Corbin, Jay Harold Smith and wife Laura of Barbourville, Leon Smith and wife Cledia of Corbin, Herbert Smith and wife Nannie Mae of Barbourville, Betty Jonyce Mills and husband Joe of Cannon and Timothy Smith and friend Diana of Barbourville; a brother, Frank Hurley of Barbourville; 22 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; her special friends, Curtis and Marty Congleton, Anna Gander, Mary Pauline Fox, Jean Woods and Dr. Mary Weiss; and a host of other family members and friends who mourn her passing.
Her funeral service was conducted at the Lighthouse Tabernacle Friday, Jan. 13 at 2 p.m. with the Revs. Jimmy Lee and Glen Crane officiating. Mrs. Smith was laid to rest in the Mills Cemetery at Boone Heights. Casketbearers were Larry Mills, Gerald Shelton, Tony Osborne, Brian Elliott, Jay Casey, Christopher Mills, Kenny Smallwood, John Willie Disney and Willie Ray Hurley. Honorary bearers were the nursing staff of the Knox County Hospital and Knox County Home Health, Dr. Toadvine and Dr. Carter.
Arrangements were under the direction of Knox Funeral Home.
