Carlos B. POPE Mr. Carlos Beaumont Pope, 90, of Barbourville, passed away Friday afternoon, April 27, 2007 in the Knox County Hospital. He was a son of the late George R. and Verda Howard Pope born on January 29, 1917 in Harlan. Mr. Pope was a graduate of Harlan High School and attended Union College where he was on the basketball team and was KIAC tennis singles and doubles champion. In 1941, he enlisted in the United State Army Air Corps. He taught in the officers' candidate school in Miami Beach where his students included actors Clark Gable, Bruce Cabot, Broderick Crawford and baseball great, Hank Greenberg. While stationed at Yale University, he was an associate of Big Band leader Glenn Miller who was director of the Army Air Corps Band. Mr. Pope served overseas in the China Burma India Theater where he was in the Air Transport Command flying the Hump over the Himalayas from India to China. He was awarded the Bronze Star. Upon leaving the Air Corps, he attended the University of Louisville School of Law and graduated in 1950. He began his legal career in Barbourville with his father-in-law, Jobie Campbell, and continued practicing until his retirement in 2003. He served as Knox County attorney for one term and for three terms as Commonwealth's attorney for the 27th Judicial District of Knox and Laurel counties. He also served as city judge, city attorney and on the Barbourville City Council. During his council tenure, the floodwall was begun, a new sewer system for the city and the present Knox County Health Department were built. He was chairman of the building committee and fought hard to see that the Knox County Hospital on High Street became a reality. He served as Company Commander of the 149th Infantry Headquarters and Headquarters Company of the Kentucky National Guard. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Barbourville where he directed the choir for many years, was a member of the choir and taught the Fishermen's Sunday school class. He was an Honorary Kentucky Colonel. He loved golf and was one of the founders and original members of the Indian Springs Golf and Country Club. He loved all sports and was an avid University of Kentucky basketball fan and a member of the University of Kentucky Fellow's Society. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers. Survivors include his loving wife of 64 years, Birchel Mae Campbell Pope to whom he was married on March 11, 1943; his daughter, Susan Joe Pope both of Barbourville; four brothers, Aubrey C. Pope of San Fernando, CA, Rev. William M. Pope and wife, Genevieve, of Maryville, TN, George Riley Pope Jr. and Charles E. Pope both of Crossville, TN; several nieces and nephews; a dear little friend, Lydia Claire Smith of Barbourville; among other loved ones and dear friends who mourn his passing. His funeral service was conducted in the chapel of the Knox Funeral Home Monday, April 30 at 2 P.M. with Rev. Shane Nickell officiating. Mr. Pope was laid to rest in the Barbourville Cemetery with military funeral honors by the American Legion. Casket bearers were Steve Smith, Doug Warriner, Jack Ketchum, Greg Helton, Wilbur Bingham, Calloway Gray Jr., Clevis Carter, Charles Buchanan, Pat McDonald and John Hauser. Honorary bearers were Guy Millward, Randy Jewell, Edwin Boyd, Dr. Edwin Smith and members of the Fishermen's Sunday school class at First Baptist Church. |
