He is survived by his wife, Bessie Oliver of Los Angeles, Calif. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Wofford Baptist Church. David Oliver, a teacher and administrator in the Whittier City School District for 35 years, died Monday in Whittier, California at age 68. Oliver was born in 1934 in Cincinnati, Ohio, the only child of Ora and Edith Oliver. After graduating from San Bernardino High School, he served in the U.S. Army with the 511th Parachute Infantry Regiment during the Korean War. After the war, he attended Whittier College, graduating in 1960. The same year he married Bessie Johnson and they made their home in Whittier for the next 43 years. Oliver's 35-year career as an educator began as a classroom teacher in the Whittier City School District and he progressed to school principal and administrator. He also was an adjunct instructor at Rio Hondo College in the English Department and the police academy. In his early community service, he was recognized by the East Whittier Junior Chamber of Commerce as Man of the Year for 1965. Along with numerous certificates of appreciation from the city of Whittier for his volunteer work with youth baseball programs, he received an honorary lifetime membership in the Parent Teacher Association. His biography is listed in "Who's Who in Kentucky, Bicentennial Family Register," "Outstanding Young Men of America" and "Families of Whitley County Kentucky." More recently, Oliver was a founding member of the US Army Museum at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and was a member of the 11th Airborne Division Association. Other memberships include The Sons of the American Revolution and The Military Vehicle Collectors Club. He wrote and published historical articles and enjoyed auto restoration, travel and camping with his grandchildren. Oliver is survived by his wife of 43 years, Bessie; daughters Cathy and Betsy Oliver; son Andy Oliver and son and daughter-in-law Tom and Brandi Oliver; and six grandchildren: Andrew, Michelle, Perry, Christopher, Mollie and Madison. He was the grandson of the late Pete and Dora Oliver of Wofford. Memorial service was held Saturday, October 18 at the Wofford Baptist Church with Dr. Jim Taylor and Rev. Bobby Joe Bunch officiating.
