Mr. Gail T. Lawson, 78, of Barbourville, passed away Sunday evening, March 16, 2003 at his home in Bonita Springs, Fla. He was a son of the late John Henry and Fannie Lunsford Lawson, born on August 10, 1924 in Barbourville. Mr. Lawson was retired from the Barbourville Police Department where he served as a police officer for 38 years. He served 21 years in the Kentucky Army National Guard and was a Barbourville volunteer firefighter for more than 30 years. He served his country, his city and his fellow man and was proud to be an American. Mr. Lawson was also a member of the First Baptist Church of Barbourville. On July 15, 1951, he united in marriage with Mareka Disney in Pineville and to this union two sons were born. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Jesse "Chick" Lawson and six sisters, Edna, Lil, Nan, Ruth, Helen and Pauline "Nip" and one grandson, Donnie Lawson. Survivors include his wife, Mareka Lawson of Barbourville; two sons, Don Lawson and wife Myrlyn and Ronald Lawson and wife Pam, all of Barbourville; four grandchildren, Nina Bingham and husband Brent, Jennifer Burke and husband Eric, Ronald Lawson Jr. and Derek Smith; two great grandchildren, Toni Bingham and Jared Burke; among other loved ones and dear friends who mourn his passing. The funeral service was conducted in Knox Funeral Home Chapel Saturday, March 22 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Shane Nickell officiating. Mr. Lawson was laid to rest in the Barbourville Cemetery. Casketbearers were Bill Swafford, Johnny Smith, Mike Broughton, James Gray, Dennis Rogers and Randy Clark. Expressions of sympathy may go to either the First Baptist Church of Barbourville or the Donnie Lawson Scholarship Fund at Union College in loving memory of Mr. Lawson. Arrangements were under the direction of Knox Funeral Home. |
