Mr. Gerald (Jerry) Halter, 59, of Barbourville, passed away Sunday evening, April 27, 2003 at his home surrounded by family and friends. He was the youngest son of Ferne Harmison Halter and the late Robert George Halter, born on April 21, 1944 in Camden, N.J. Jerry was a 1962 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and an active member of the YMCA in Camden where he later became Physical Director. During the summers of his college years, he worked at his family's Beehive Restaurant in Ocean City, N.J. He was a 1968 graduate of Union College. While attending Union College, he was a member of the swim team, baseball team and U Club. His love of swimming and teaching combined, produced an excellent swim coach for Union College. Following his graduation, he was a Union College recruiter and volunteered for various college activities. On Saturday, April 26, 2003, he was awarded the Alumni Association Distinguished Athletic Service Award for all of his years of volunteerism to the Union College athletic department. Jerry was also a former Union National Bank employee. He served for 27 years in the Barbourville Independent School System as educator, administrator, mentor, Director of Pupil Personnel, seventh grade history teacher, driver's education instructor, swimming, basketball and baseball coach. He faithfully served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War and was very proud of his Kentucky Colonel Commission. He served as an Alumni Association board member on the Union College Board of Trustees and as a board member of the Knox County Hospital. He was an active and loyal member of the Barbourville First United Methodist Church, where he served in various leadership roles. On May 25, 1968, he united in marriage with Sheila Lynn Dozier in Barbourville.

He is survived by his wife, Sheila, of Barbourville; two children, Jill Elaine Halter Owens and husband Chene McKenzie, of Barbourville, and Dawn Michelle Halter Krohn and husband Brian Dale, of Lafayette, Ind.; two grandchildren, Trey McKenzie and Tori Danielle Owens; his mother, Ferne Harrison Halter, of Bowling Green; one brother, Charles (Corky) Halter and wife Scottie, of Bowling Green; his mother-in-law, Laura Dozier; two sisters-in-law, Karen Hampton and husband John and Deborah Tye and husband Charlie; two brothers-in-law, Douglas Dozier and wife Opal and Dennis Dozier and wife Kathy, all of Barbourville; his nieces and nephews, Jeffery Halter and wife Kim and their children, Chelsey and Laura Leigh, Timothy Halter and wife Valerie and their children, Mandy and Allysa, all of Bowling Green, Lori Beth Hampton, Charles Tye Jr. and wife Wendy, and their children, Whitley, Cassie, Hunter and Maria Kay, Winston Tye and children, Tyler, Paije and Dakota, Richard Tye, Eric Dozier and wife Shanna, Samantha, Angela and Jonathon Dozier, all of Barbourville; two aunts, Dolly Newhard and Mary (Mert) Girock and husband Herman; his cousins, Marcia Smith and husband Steven and their three children, Brian Girock and wife Sherry and their three children and Stefanie Wheaton and husband Sam, all of New Jersey; among other loved ones and dear friends who mourn his passing. A memorial service will be conducted at the Barbourville First United Methodist Church Friday, May 2 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. David Miller and Dr. George Strunk officiating.

Honorary bearers will be Ken Boggs, Jerry Carey, Harold Carey, Bob Clement. Don Calitri, Eric Canady, Derek Collins who will be representing all of Jerry's baseball and baksetball teams, Ernie Coscia, Leamon Davidson, Mike Deaton, Phil Fox, Elbert Hampton, Pat Hauser, Stanley (Hoot) Hembree, Gerald Hyde, Ken Jackson, Dr. David Joyce, Glynn Patterson, Harold Patterson, Jim Tye, Blair Skidmore who will be representing all of his driver's education students and swim team members and Steve Skidmore as Jerry's personal Heavenly tour guide.

Friends may call at the church Thursday between 6 and 9 p.m. and Friday prior to the memorial service.

Expressions of sympathy may go to the Gerald B. Halter Memorial Scholarship Fund at Union College, 310 College Street, Barbourville, Ky. 40906 in loving memory of Jerry.

Arrangements are under the direction of Knox Funeral Home.
