James M. Gilbert, 87, of Big Richland, passed away Thursday, April 15, 1999 in the Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington. He was the son of the late Jasper Gilbert and Malinda Blanton Gilbert born in Knox County on November 15, 1911. He was a member of the Mount Arrat Baptist Church. He was a well known Knox County farmer. He was a former director on the Soil Conservation Agency Board and Farm Service Agency Board in Knox County. On July 31, 1933 he united in marriage with Mahala Black who preceded him in death. Others preceding him in death three sons, J.B. Gilbert, James Gilbert Jr., and Nathan Gilbert; sisters, Hettie Cole, Mittle Jane Baker, Angeline Chesnut, and Esther Gilbert; brothers, Rev. Nathan Gilbert, Critt Gilbert, and Calvin Gilbert; and sons-in-law, Thomas E. Ralston, Syd Hull, also preceded him in death.
Survivors include his children, Evelyn Jeree Cenkar and husband Joe of Highland, California, Jeanette Trial and husband Tommy of Lake Station, Indiana, Mary Linda Balta and husband Ronnie of Morresboro, North Carolina, and Wilma Ralston of Barbourville, Harold Gilbert and wife Barbara of London and Carson Gilbert and wife Ileta of Big Richland; a sister, Edna Turner and a brother Claude Gilbert and wife Annie, all of London; 25 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren. Funeral services for James M. Gilbert were conducted Sunday, April 18, 1999 at 2 p.m. in the Hopper Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Tilford Rader and Rev. Dennis Chesnut officiating. Burial followed in the Gilbert Family Cemetery on the Tedders Creek Road in Knox County. Pallbearers were grandsons of Mr. Gilbert. Honorary pallbearers were all friends and neighbors of the Gilbert family. Hopper Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements |
