Claude Arthur Gibson Jr., 78, of Girdler, was born on September 11, 1924 at Hammons Fork in Knox County. He was a son of the late Claude Arthur Gibson Sr. and Ethel Woolum Gibson. Mr. Gibson died in Laurel Heights Home For The Elderly, in London, Monday, June 2, 2003. He was a member of Locust Grove Baptist Church at Girdler.

Mr. Gibson attended Union College for two years before going to the Army. After returning from the service, he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Education at Eastern Kentucky University and later received his Bachelor of Science and Masters Degree in Agriculture from the University of Kentucky. Mr. Gibson was employed by the Knox County Board of Education for thirty years before retiring. He began his teaching career at the age of seventeen, following his father and mother's footsteps. His father had taught in the Knox County School System for forty-five years. Mr. Gibson served in the United States Army during World War II until he was wounded and seriously injured on Februrary 6, 1945. For his courageous deeds serving our country, he was awarded a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. Mr. Gibson was a member of the Knox County Teachers Association, the Kentucky Education Association of Retired Teachers, the Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion and Kentucky Republican Party.

On March 25, 1951, he united in marriage with Ivadean Harmon and to this union two children were born. He is survived by his wife of fifty-two years, Ivadean Gibson of Girdler, Kentucky; his daughter, Claudia Gibson Greenwood and husband David of Gray, Kentucky; his son, Gary Gibson and wife Melissa of Mitchell, South Dakota; two grandsons, Lee Gibson and wife Tina of Horseheads, New York and Beau Gibson and wife Kelly of Lexington, Kentucky; his brother, Clyde Gibson and wife Faye of Barbourville; his sister-in-law, Marie Gibson of Sierra Vista, Arizona; and many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mr. Gibson was preceded in death by a brother, Elmer Gibson and infant sister, Thelma Gibson.

Funeral services for Claude Arthur Gibson Jr. were conducted at Locust Grove Baptist Church, Girdler, Kentucky, Friday, June 6, 2003 with the Rev. James Siler and the Rev. Leonard Harmon officiating. Interment was in Barbourville Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Charlie Gambrel, Grover Gambrel, Harrison Davis, Dexter Smith, Ronnie Abner and Garrett Hinkle. Honorary pallbearers were: The Mens Sunday School Class at the Locust Grove Baptist Church, all employees at the Knox County Board of Education, all Knox County retired teachers, Dr. Keith Gibson, the Rev. Earl Hammons, Harry Corey, Harley Woolum, Bob Yeary, Jerry Chadwell, Donald Joe Irvin, Alvin Smith, Glendale Smith, Elvis Smith, Charles Wilburn and Claude Mills. The Gibson family received friends at Hopper Funeral Home Thursday and on Friday until 1 p.m. Mr. Gibson was taken to the Locust Grove Baptist Church for funeral services. Arrangements were under the direction of Hopper Funeral Home.
