Martha GAMBREL Mrs. Martha Bargo Gambrel was born at Salt Gum, Kentucky on April 14, 1920, and died on October 18, 2007, having lived 87 years, five months, and 18 days. She was preceded in death by her parents, James Bargo and Nancy Mills Bargo, as well as her husband, Johnie Gambrel, seven brothers: Edward, Emmanuel, General, Nasby, Obie, Victor, and Walter Bargo, four sisters: Mary Messer, Mamie Mills, Betty Hale and Amanda Woods, and one step-daughter, Helen Hale. She is survived by one sister, Chelsea Bargo of Gray, Kentucky, one son, Clyde Gambrel, of Bimble, Kentucky, three granddaughters, Christina Hendrickson of Middlesboro, Kentucky, Teresa Ann House of Lily, Kentucky, and Cynthia Dean Slavey of Bimble, Kentucky, as well as several great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, and a host of cousins, friends, and other family. Martha lived her entire life in Knox County, Kentucky, except for a brief stay in Detroit, Michigan, where she went with her husband to work in the war effort making airplane parts. She was widely known as an expert quilter, with quilts being purchased by people all over the United States. She also loved to sing in the choir at her home church, Springfield Baptist in Bimble, to work in the garden, and to cook large Sunday dinners. Martha, affectionately known as "Granny Marthy" by most who knew her, was a strong believer in Christ. Martha Gambrel is immortalized in the many treasures she left behind for her family in the form of the carefully-stitched quilts she made by hand and the tender smile she bestowed on anyone she met.Martha's greatest legacy is perhaps the kindness that shone out from her face and for that she will always be remembered. Her funeral service was conducted in the chapel of the Knox Funeral Home Saturday, October 20 at 2 P.M. with Rev. Bill Wolfe and Rev. John Carter officiating. Her final resting place was in at the Dozier Cemetery, on the mountain behind the house where she spent most of her adult life.Casket bearers were Silas House, Jeffrey Slavely, Jonathan Hendrickson, Jamie Ward, Jeff Sears and John Sears. Serving as an honorary bearer was Vantory Bargo.Arrangements were under the direction of the Knox Funeral Home. |
