Defining Appalachia

"Under the Appalachian Regional Development Act, Congress has defined Appalachia as an area extending from the Mohawk Valley in New York to the Fall Line Hills in Mississippi.

There are some who would differ with those boundaries.

There are others who regard "Appalachia" as synonymous with the southern mountains of West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina and Georgia. A good case can be made for such a definition. Here is where the old Appalachian traditions and patterns of life still persist in some areas. It is here to, that Appalachian poverty is most severe" *
