Women Jurors
Stiff Fines and Jail Terms Handed out to Law Violators by Paintsville Women
Stapleton is Busy
Johnson County and Paintsville had their first women juries last week in Magistrate Burgean's court and the county court when a number of case were being heard for milling whiskey. The women assessed the limit of the law in every case inflicting the jail sentence with the fine.
The following women were called to court to serve on the juries but were objected to by the defendants, Mrs. E. M. Clay, Mrs. B. F. Roberts, Mrs. Geo W. Preston, Mrs. G .V. Daniel, Mrs. Millard Fraley, Mrs. J. K. Butcher, Mrs. Pauline Robinson, Mrs. Don C. VanHoose, Mrs. Edna J Kirk, Mrs. Lloyd Clay.
The performance of these women on the jury has put a scare into those who violate the law. Now that women have been used it is fair to say that they will be used more frequently in the future.
County attorney Sam Stapleton is proving himself an effective prosecutor. He is making it hard for bootleggers and other types of criminals. His rigid enforcement of the law is meeting the approval of the good citizens of this county. He made a telling speech to the juries last week to help stop the liquor Violations and his rigid prosecution is having an effect on law violators. The good people of the county are behind him.
