Nephew of Local Man is River Victim

The body of Willard Edward Hood, 22, 1313 Caster Ave., Ashland, Ky, World War II veteran, nephew of Mr. O. C. Cooper of this city, who was drowned Tuesday, July 12, 1947, while swimming in the Ohio river near the Coal Grove bridge, was recovered by the rescue squad of the Ashland Police and Fire Department. The victim was found near the scene of the tragedy. He was identified by Homer Stevens and Roy Lambert. Boyd County Coroner, J. Fred Miller, said death was due to accidental drowning. Bryan Morrow, a houseboat dweller, and Joe Woods, who was on a nearby street, reported seeing the youth drown. The body was removed to the Miller Funeral Home. Funeral services were conducted at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Enterprise Baptist Church, Westwood, and burial was in the Dixon Cemetery. The Rev. Kelley McGraw officiated at the last rites.
