One of the most prominent business men of Paintsville is Silas Oppenheimer
Mr. Oppenheimer was born in Germany in the year 1858 and came to America in 1876 having been a citizen of the United States for 51 years, where he has been continuously engaged in business. Besides being a good business man he is a Mason in high standing. He is a member of the Paintsville Lodge F. & A. M. and has served his lodge as Master. He is also a thirty second degree Mason and a member of the Shrine. He has also been an Odd Fellow for Forty seven years, and has always been active in lodge work.
Mr. Oppenheimer located in business about twenty two years ago with his partner the late N. Flax under the firm name of Oppenheimer and Flax. At that time their stock was small;;, but today the store, of which he is the senior member is recognized to be one of the leading mercantile establishments in the Big Sandy Valley.
Aside from holding the distinction of one of the oldest men in point of business in the valley, he is recognized as a model citizen and loyal to his home community. He is always found in the forefront lending his influence to all worthy causes and is a liberal contributor to churches and charitable institutions.
Due to this exemplary life and the kind ways Silas Oppenheimer has many loyal friends/ Age has not robbed him of the good things in life. He is jolly, good natured, with a cheerful disposition, and is favorably known to the people of Paintsville and Johnson County where he is held in high esteem.
