Summer School Has Enrolled 83 Students: “The Summer Training School for teachers which is in session here at the High School building, has enrolled 83 students. This is the largest enrollment that the Summer School has ever had. The school is progressing nicely with Prof. W. C. Brandenburg in charge.”

     “The Summer School is filling a great mission in Johnson County as it gives the teachers of the county a chance to keep well posted and up to the minute on their work.”

Paintsville High School Honor Roll

                One half of the school year is finished, the schedule for the second semester is well arranges and in smooth working order. The record for the past month is the best yet attained.

                Interested readers will observe the consistent record made by the representative students of the Junior and Freshman Class. The junior class leads with the highest present of honor students, nut the freshman class ranked high in metal efficiency. Three of the students, Eulas Williams, Jim Bayes and Polly Preston having a straight "A" average in four subjects. Iva Branham, star honor student and a junior, maintains her "A" average in five classes. The following is the honor roll by classes:

Teachers Named For County Schools For The 1930-’31 School Year: Thelma Preston, District 26 (George’s Creek); Velma Wheeler, District 9 (Three Fork’s of Greasy); Mona Daniel, District 21 (Thealka); Rex Picklesimer, District 70 (Asa); Edna Picklesimer, District 79 (Fairview). Bird Preston was listed as a trustee for District 79 (Fairview).

Johnson County Schools Financial Statement ’29-‘30 School Year: Bird Preston  taking census  $1.80  Teaching salaries; Velma Wheeler $619.50, Thelma Wheeler $462.00, Rex Picklesimer $511.00, Edna Picklesimer $574.00.

Schools To Open Sept. 2

1,000 Pupils Return To Grade and High Classes

     “More than 1,000 students are expected to march to the Paintsville Public school  building  Tuesday, September 2 for enrollment in the 1941-42 scholastic activities.”

     “Superintendent R. G. Huey has announced that enrollment will begin at 1 o’clock Tuesday afternoon. Also that all pupils entering the eighth and ninth grades are requested to be at the school office Saturday of this week (August 30) for enrollment.”

     “Children who will be six years old by September 30 may enter school, otherwise they cannot enter, it was announced.”

     “Besides Superintendent Huey, other members of the faculty are:”

     “First Grade; Claudia Butler, Mayme Tackett Dyer and Elizabeth Pack.”

     “Second Grade; Christine Murray, Mavis Patrick and Miriam Thomas.”

     “Third Grade; Lois Brand, Elizabeth Jenkins and Lillian Williams.”

PHS Teachers For 1942-43 Term Announced, Practically All Grade Teachers Are Local People: “R. G. Huey, Superintendent of the Paintsville City Schools, announces this week that the Board of Education at a recent meeting employed twenty-eight grade teachers for the 1942-43 term.”

     “Practically the whole lot of teachers comes from local families and are experienced in their work.”

     “Following are the names of the teachers employed by the board: Ruth Adams, Alpharetta Archer, Lois Brand, Imogene Mayo, Alice Jane Montgomery, Mary McClafferty, Anna Louise Preston, Cecil M. Preston, Lorraine C. Wiley, May Williams, W. L. Perkins, Sola Phillips, Fay Holbrook, Mavis B. Patrick, Sara Jane Hicks, Jessie Porter, Mary Louise Stafford, Hannah Jean Ward, Helen Thomas, Alice C. Stewart, Madge Stafford, Imogene B. Ward, Lillian Williams, Christine Murray, Miriam Thomas, Claudia Butler, Mayme Tackett Dyer and Elizabeth Pack.”

 1945 City Schools Begin Tuesday, Sept. 4th  

Faculty For Paintsville High and Graded School One Of Best In Many years

     Paintsville High School and Graded School will begin Tuesday, September 4 at 9:00 a. m.

     Registration of High School students will be in accordance with the following schedule.

     Seniors will register on Thursday, August 30 at 9:00 a. m.

     Juniors will register on Thursday, August 30 at 1:00 p. m.

     Sophomores will register on Friday, August 31 at 9 a. m.

     Freshmen will register on Friday, August 31 at 1 p. m.

     The faculty for Paintsville High School for 1945-1946 will be comprised of Alice Jane Montgomery, Alphretta Archer, Oran Teater, Garnett Cooper, Lydia Alexander, Mary McClafferty, W. L. Perkins, coach, Lorraine Wiley and Mae Williams, Librarian. Teachers for Junior High School are Faye Holbrook, Elaine Kirk, Helen Pack, Mary L. Stafford, Hannah Ward and Ethel Conley.

     Teachers for Graded School will be Fanny Louise Hampton, 4th grade, Helen Irene Thomas, 4th grade, Alice Stewart, 4th grade, Lillian Williams, 3rd grade, Madge Stafford, 3rd grade, Elizabeth Dameron, 3rd grade, Christine Murray, 2nd grade, Ruth Gunning, 2nd grade, Mavis Patrick, 2nd grade, Elizabeth Pack, first grade, Mayme Dyer, 1st grade, and Claudia Butler, 1st grade.

     Nelson Gullett is Attendance Officer, Elizabeth Williams, Secretary and J. Matt Sparkman, Superintendent.

August 23, 1945

Van Lear Schools Open Mon., Aug 27

     The school at Van Lear will open on Monday, August 27, with the following staff of teachers;

     High School: Hysell Burchett, superintendent and principal, Alfred Johnson, Mrs. E. Morris and Mrs. Florence Meade.

     Grades: Ray Conley, principal, Mrs. O. I. Risner, Atha Mae Lemaster, Mrs. Lowell Phillips, Mrs. Arzie Conley, Ann Beers, Mrs. A. B. Wilfong and Clyde Phelps, coach and teacher at No. 5.

     No. 5 school will open on the same date.

     A meeting of all teachers will be held Saturday, August 25, at 10:30 a. m. in the high school building. Every plan is being earnestly worked on for a successful school year. Parents are urged and encouraged to see that their child miss the least possible during this school year.

     The schools are fortunate in securing the services of a staff of teachers with high standing and qualifications.
