Miller Creek RR Train #1
Donated by: Donna Cox [coxd@zoomnet.net]
This train photo was found in album of Evelyn Stepp Preston, daughter of Ben and Effie Wooten Stepp, and granddaughter of Thomas Alfred Wooten and Mariah Emily Chapman. These families lived at Richardson, Lawrence County, KY.
The train has the number "1" indicating
that it was the first train with the initials MCRR. Via an internet contact, I
have learned that this is the Miller Creek Rail Road; a section of railroad
built ca 1910 by Consolidated Coal between Van Lear and Paintsville to move coal
to Paintsville to connect with the C&O railroad.
I am not sure how this photo relates to my family. My great-grandfather was a
railroader for the N&W and it may have belonged to him. If you have any
information on this train or the people in the picture I would love to hear from
you.
MCCR was the Millers Creek RR which was built by the Consolidated Coal Co. to transport its' coal at Van Lear to a connection with the Chesapeake & Ohio RR near Paintsville, a distance of approximately four miles. Construction was in 1909, as the first carload of coal was shipped ( from Mine # 151) in 1910. The ownership of this RR was transferred to the Baltimore & Ohio RR on December 31, 1917. Consolidated repurchased it as at July 1, 1923, and resold it to the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway Company.
