THE PASSING OF MARCUS DAVIS
The visitation of death is often sudden, but in the taking of Marcus Davis his presence has long been felt. It has been seven years since Marcus Davis suffered his first paralytic stroke. For a time this stroke threatened to be fatal. The care of his devoted wife; her devotion to his every need, finally enabled him to come and go, (paper damaged)..... On January 19, death gained his victory and Paintsville lost a valued and esteemed citizen.
Among the virtues of men none is of greater value then faithfulness. He who is faithful is rewarded by confidence and esteem of his fellowman and he is promised a special reward in the kingdom of heaven. "thou good and faithful servant." is an especial greeting and an endearing term by which the faithful are welcomed into heaven by the Heavenly Father. Marcus Davis was faithful in all relations in his life. He was faithful in work; faithful to his wife; faithful to his friends; faithful to his own convictions--business, social and religious.
He delighted in the fine arts and gave most of his time selling, repairing and fine tuning pianos. In this work he was not only faithful but fully efficient. In the instruments he sold he always gave good values and gave painstaking, considerate attention to each customers need. In this work there is now no one who can take his place. His going leaves a vacancy in our frequent needs. His going leaves a sadness in our hearts. We turn from our own sorrow to give our sympathy to his devoted wife and sorrowing relatives.
For us who have lived here through the years there is a constant problem of readjustments when we come to an hour such as this one. The "old familiar faces" that we were wont to greet as we passed to and fro on the village street are fewer as the years go by. The old town will wear a different look for many of us since Marcus Davis is no more seen among us. We shall miss his friendly greeting.
Bereavement falls heavily upon us. Let us remember the gospel wherein we stand. For salvation we are all dependant upon the mercy of our Saviour. We are often quick and hard in the judgment of men, forgetting that we set limits upon the greatness of our Lord. We are none of us saved through our own goodness but through the mercy of our Lord. And our Lord has a particularly warned us on our judgments against another. Marcus Davis professed peace with God. May God's peace be his eternal inheritance.
"Out of the strain of the Doing
Into the peace of the done,
Out in the thirst of Pursuing
In to the rapture of Won.
Out of grey mist into brightness,
Out of pale dusk into Dawn
Out of all wrong into Rightness,
We from these fields shall be gone
'Nay,' say the saints, 'Not gone but come,'
Into Eternity's Harvest Home."
