Before her first marriage, Mrs. Maynard was Miss Kentucky Sowards, daughter of Lewis Sowards, and lived a few miles out of Pikeville.
The first marriage venture of Mrs. Maynard was when she was 16. She married William M Scott, December 14, 1869, according to the goose quill pen record in the county clerks office. Mr Scott became of the leading merchants and when he died he left his widow a large estate including much of the land that Pikeville now stands.
R M Ferrell, Confederate Veteran of the War Between the States, was the second to win the present Mrs. Maynards hand. They were married in 1876 and years of prosperity for Mr Ferrell and his wife followed.
Mr Ferrell died in the early nineties and, as her third husband the veterans widow chose Samuel J. Salyer. The selection did not prove satisfactory. A legal separation followed, Mr Salyer moved to California, where he was killed in an automobile accident last year.
Just after the turn of the century. James Press Power, a traveling salesman, appeared on the horizon of the erstwhile Miss Sowards. The pair was wed June 4, 1902 and Mr Powers abandoned his salesmanship for work in business in Pikeville, but he too died, and as a fifth husband his widow took U S Music, West Virginia real estate dealer. The date of the marriage was March 12, 1919.
When the two were married, Mr Musick exacted a promise from his bride then 75, that she marry again if she survived. Mr Musick died last year and suitors were waiting on Mrs. Musick. She fulfilled her promise to her most recent husband by picking the Rev Mr. Maynard. The minister by the way is 53, and this is his second married venture.
Mrs Maynard is a devoted member of the Christian Church and it is largely due to her efforts and donations that the present church here was erected. The four-time widow owns real estate in Florida, in Central Kentucky and here and large buildings and securities. Her fortune is estimated at $250,000. She has no children.
