Kirk Fairchild
Kirk Fairchild was the fifth child of 11 children born to John and Rosa Lee Horn Fairchild. He was born at Hagerhill, Johnson County KY October, 12th 1894 and died April 13th, 1984 in Monticello, Wayne County KY. When he was a young boy he delivered groceries for the commissary, a general store owned by the coal mine. He was also a water boy for the mine.
He left Johnson County when he enlisted in the WWI. He enlisted at Ft. Thomas KY and traveled from Paintsville, KY to Camp Zachary Taylor, KY. He served as a private in WWI beginning August 3rd, 1917. He left the U.S. December 24, 1918 for overseas duty.
The battles engagements, skirmishes and expeditions he was credit involvement in included: Joulon Sect. Mar.15, May 13, Ainse Def. June 25 Chateau Jhiery Sect. June 6. Jul.9 Ainse Marne. July 19-21 Monbache sect Aug. 9-16 Lt. Mihiel off. Sept 12-15 Meuse Argonrie Rhine Nov. 17 - Dec, 12-1918 Army of Oacup Dec. 1, 1918 July 5 1919. He arrived back in U.S. August,4th 1919. He was then was discharged August, 14th1919 at Camp Zachary Taylor, KY.
After serving in the army for two years and eleven days, (one year, seven months, and eleven days in the European front) he attended an agricultural training school in Camp Sherman Ohio and later in Bowling Green, Ky. At a later date he received 10 percent disability and as of October, 15th 1928 was "in receipt of an" allowance of $50.00 a month
He met and married Vevia Pearl Bertram October, 27th 1923 at Chillicothe Ohio. They moved to Wayne County KY where they purchased a 75 acre farm at Slat, KY on April, 13th 1913 for the sum of $600. Two years later they tore down the log house and built a seven room house for $700. They had four children; one died at birth and another soon after birth. Kirk tended their farm for fifty two years and was married for 61 years, five months, and 22 days before his death. He is buried at Cartwright, Clinton County, KY
