W. Pitt Witten was born June 9th, 1882 near Staffordsville this County. He was the youngest son of William Pitt Witten and Mary J Dixon Witten. His father died when he was about a year old leaving him in the care of his mother and the rest of the family. They moved soon afterwards to a farm in Oil Springs where Pitt was raised until he was called to join that innumerable caravan which moves to that mysterious calm. Pitt fully realized that death was approaching and that the end of life was near but he looked it squarely in the face like that of a brave soldier facing the enemy. He made his will disposing of all his property amply providing for each family member entitled to his property. His earthly business was arranged just the way he wanted it. In arranging his earthly business he did not overlook the welfare of his soul. He told the writer that he was ready to meet his God any time, that his sins had been forgiven and all was well with him. He said that he hated to leave his family but he should be satisfied that his little children would be provided with a good home and plenty. The community has never witnessed a braver nor stronger faith in God. His manner of going should be an example and a warning to those still living. He was not as the quarry slave scourged to his danger but like one who wraps the drapery of his couch about him and is drawn into pleasant dreams. He leaves a rich heritage, his neighbors had learned to love and respect him and no one ever went to him and was turned away empty handed. He will be missed in the community in which he lived. Dr. Walter Connolly, a nephew but more like a brother together with Dr F M Witten fought gallantly till the end. Dr Connolly was made administrator of the estate. Pitt leaves three sister, a wife, and four children and a host of friends to mourn their loss which is deeply felt The Paintsville Herald July 21, 1927
