Eighteen months in a prison camp in Germany did not discourage SSgt. Gene Castle, who on being discharged from the U.S. Army, re-enlisted for another three years and left last week with his paratroop battalion to serve with the occupation forces in Frankfort, Germany.
Castle, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Luther Castle, city, joined the Army on August 25, 1941 when seventeen years old and a student at Meade Memorial High School. He served in the U.S. Rangers in North Africa, Sicily and Italy. He was captured by the German in Italy, and after 18 months in a prisoner of war camp, was liberated by the Russians.
He has just recently earned the right to wear the Boots and Wings" Of the Unites States Army Airborne Troops.
Sgt. Castle was home for a short visit before leaving on April 24 for New Jersey where he will go by air to his new location at Frankfort, Germany.
