Ex-Deputy Sheriff is Victim in Roadhouse Dispute

On the eve of a special grand jury session called for the purpose of investigating the "disappearance" of a murder witness and other violations committed since the regular grand jury adjourned, Dewey Salisbury, Amba. Former Floyd County deputy Sheriff was shot and killed in a Boldman roadhouse Sunday Afternoon.

                His slayer, Harry Gordon Hopkins about 25 years old of Harold, was indicted for murder by the grand jury Monday morning and that afternoon executed $10,000 bond.

                The shooting took place Susan's Place in which had gathered a group of more than a dozen men and women. Hopkins revolver bullet struck Salisbury in the chest and he died with out speaking.

                It was the second officer slain within a month. Deputy Sheriff Marion Layne was shot to death January 4.

                Lillie Mae Hall, who said she witnessed the slaying told officers that the former deputy was sitting in a booth when Hopkins approached him and said. "You can't do me like you did my brother." As Salisbury rose to his feet, Miss Hall said, Hopkins fired. She also said that Hopkins struck Salisbury after firing one shot.

                Deputy Thomas Akers said Salisbury was unarmed. He quoted Emma Nelson as saying that after Hopkins had made some remark to the ex-officer, he jabbed his revolver into Salisbury's face as the latter rose. The weapon was discharged. Salisbury then began pawing at Hopkins with his open hands, he was struck with the revolver after he had sunk to his hands and knees.

                McKinley Hopkins, father of the slayer, said his son had been threatened by Salisbury and had dodged him on different occasions. He said that when his son entered the Boldman restaurant Salisbury rose and began shoving him. After pushing Hopkins back near the door by which he had entered this report says that Salisbury started to draw his revolver and was shot.
