This is a time when women were allowed in the military in order to "Free a Man to Fight"
Dorothy joined the Navy December 11, 1943 from the Cincinnati Naval Office. Boot Camp at this time lasted 6 weeks and was taken at Hunter College.
She was a graduate of Paintsville High School and had worked for Bell Telephone before her enlistment.

The Women's Reserve of the U.S. Naval Reserve was established in 1942 by Act of Congress. WAVES means "Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service"
