NESTLÉ'S QUIK!

When I was about 6 years old I stayed with my mama and papa on their farm on Elk Fork in Morgan County. I was told not to leave the farm and to go no further than the barn. So, off I went to the barn! I always stopped on the way to the chicken coop to look at the chicks and maybe try to get them to play with me. Play with a chick????

Yeah right! LOL Ah, the joys of childhood!

Well, they must've not been in the mood to play so I wandered on up to the barn. I always checked the stall for the mule my papa had and there he was lookin right at me and always ready for a pat on the nozzle. I then made my way to the milk cow, Bessie. You remember Bessie don't you??? She's the one who butted papa in the ummmm, shall we say sittin position LOL. Gave her a pat on the nose and went out the back of the barn to the cow path. COW PATH??? Yes, I said cow path LOL.

I remembered pap's warning but my curiosity got the best of me and off I went to Janie's!!! Janie was my mama and papa's neighbor and she had given me my first delicious sample of Nestlé's Quik and few months earlier. I knocked on the door and Janie let me in. Janie was always telling me funny stories and keeping me company and I always enjoyed my stay with her. As usual I lost track of time and before you know it I had to leave. On my way back from Janie's I saw my papa comin down the cow path with the mule and didn't look too pleased!

OH BOY!!! I'm in trouble now!!!!!!! Sure enough he had this real stern look on his face .He stopped about a foot in front of me and said "Girl, where have you been? your mama's been worried half to death about you!" In my little girl voice I said "I'm sorry papa, I won't do it again!" and he said "all right ,but don't let it happen again!".

He picked me up and put me on the mule's back. I thought to myself "boy, is it big up here! I can see everything!" Well, my journey to the barn was all to short and papa pulled me off the mule. We walked back to the house and there was mama standin and waitin on the porch. The only thing she ever said to me was "don't you ever do that again". I went over and hugged her and said I was sorry and she gave me the best hug I've ever had.

It's their love for family and people that keeps me going for them and their ancestors. Mama had a gentle laugh that carried to your heart and papa had one of those knee-slapping chuckles! I will carry these wonderful memories till i go home to meet them.

Sincerely,

Connie
