Church of Christ
Stambaugh
The Stambaugh Church of Christ is Johnson County’s best preserved community church. Originally build of hand-hewn logs, this church has undergone many facelifts as it retained its central role in the community. Troy Stambaugh and Jim Akers, members of the church at its beginning in 1887, were responsible for its construction. It is told that Gen. James Garfield, himself a member of the Church of Christ, encamped with his soldiers one- fourth mile during the Civil War. Garfield then held Sunday services for his troops the following day.

The Troy and Mary Witten Stambaugh family keeps the church cleaned, repaired, etc. Each year the family meets for a Sunday church service on Memorial Weekend which is the date of their annual family reunion.
**The source of the information for the listing of the Church of Christ at Stambaugh, Kentucky is on the National Register of Historical Places. The certificate was obtained and framed by Jo Ann Martin of Stambaugh, Kentucky. It now hangs on the wall of the little country church where the old organ and piano are now silent. Once a year, the
family gather to worship where many of their relatives were baptized and attended
church. There is a special feeling and closeness when we worship in the little white church which was the center of the Troy and Mary Witten Stambaugh family’s lives.

It is possible that the church has the most unique address of any listing in the National Register of Historical Places---“Frog Ornery Branch.” And we are proud that the name of the “city” is Stambaugh. I have heard it called “The Garden Spot of the World.”
