Carved in 2001 by Carl J. Fyffe. One can never truly appreciate the art form of this unless standing beside it. While in Ohio,we stayed at Unlce Carl and Aunt Mary Fay Fyffe's home. Before we left we stood by it for a quick snap shot, pictured is Melanie & Greg Cantrell.
It took near four months to carve this. I am 6' tall, as you can see in the photo,it towers far above my head. The detail is so real in each of the carvings of a Thunderbird, wolf, bear and the beaver. Very artistic.
This was taken about 1963. Lois Salyer Canrtrell, their Uncle Laffette"Lafe" Salyer, and Opal Williams. Uncle Lafe lived on Mt. Tabor Rd. near Waverly Ok. He passed away in 1964. John and lafe were brothers to Freeman and Clint. While John and Lafe decided to settle in Oh. in the 1920's, Freeman and Grt Uncle Clint stayed in Ky their whole lives.I think what got Uncle Lafe and John up there was the corn cutting. I can remember Papaw Freeman tell of how he and several area farmers of Red Bush and Keaton would get their crops" laid by" and go to Ohio to cut corn for 50 cents a day. In latter yrs. it was a nickell a shock for cutting field corn. They would walk every step to Oh. and work in the Waverly area.
This came from Grandma Pearlie Rowland Salyer's photo album.Cythia was the dau. of Preston Bolen, married Armstrong Rowland.
I have identified this to be Elizabeth Jane"Mother Jane" Holbrook Estep in her later years.I have compard this photo to the Estep family photo with Elizabeth Jane being seated in the middle of the front row.
Taken from a tin-type photo, this is Scott Estep, born Jan. 1875,and Minnie Alice Salyer Estep, born 1883.They were the parents of Flora Mae Estep Cantrell, wife of Jim Cantrell
I got a copy of this with a 110 camera at Grt. Aunt Goldie Estep's in about 1990. If you look closley in the photo, you will see the reflection of Goldie's daughter,Jean.
The persons in the photo are Kelly Frazier born 1798,and Sarah "Sallie" Stapleton. They are the parents of Mary Frazier, wife of Haden Cantrell, parents of Jim Cantrell.
The date of this photo is not known, but it was missing Ambrose, maybe after he died? Names are L to R front row: Scott Estep, Frankie Conley, Elizabeth Jane Holbrook, and William "Bill" Estep
Standing rear L to R is: Paris Estep, Jim Estep, Minnie Estep Isom, Manda Belle Estep Cantrell, and Bob Estep.
It is noted in this photo a railroad accident had not yet taken place as Bob still had both arms.
Great grandpa Hade Cantrell was well known as a fiddle playerin the early 1900's. My Grandma Pearlie Salyer spoke of how he would play at pie suppers and barn dances.
The fiddle I believe is posibly one made by Enoch Fairchild in the late 1880's, if so it is a very rare piece as there are few in existance today.Enoch was a blacksmith/gun maker and instrument maker. His shop was on paint crk. at Paintsville,Ky. The fiddle is now owned by Mary Cantrell Fyffe
