A Letter to The Editor of the Painstville Herald 1949  Hawaii  August 17, 1944 Dear Editor;      I felt like I should drop you a line or so in appreciation of the fine paper you put out. I am one of the boys that left Johnson County on May 17, 1944 for the Navy. I read your paper while at home. My father received one every week. Now my father has subscribed for me and oh boy, how we guys yearn to get hold of it to see what everybody at home is doing. I sure love to read the letters sent in by the boys in service. I may learn where some of them are and have a chance to run into them. Here are some of the boys that went into the Navy when I did: Marion Castle, Jr., Woodrow Collins, Vincent Plummer, Lawrence Jennings and Monroe Castle and some boys from Paintsville who are good pals of mine. We don’t know how long we will be here, but I hope the Herald will follow me wherever I go. So thanks a lot and keep sending it. Burdette Kretzer 1925 - 2002      Funeral services were held today, Wednesday, March 20, 2002 1 p.m. at the Phelps & Son Funeral Home, Paintsville, for Burdette (B.B.) Kretzer, Jr., who passed away Sunday, March 17 at his Van Lear residence.      Mr. Kretzer was born December 12, 1925 in Mordue, W.Va., son of the late Burdette and Bertha McKnight Kretzer.      Surviving are his wife, Louise King Kretzer; four sons, Bill Kretzer of Winchester, Doug Kretzer of Stanville, Burdette (Binky) Kretzer III of Thelma, and David Kretzer of Van Lear; one daughter, Madonna Rose of Flat Gap; six brothers, Doug Kretzer of Spokane, Washington, Luie Kretzer of Meally, Kenny Kretzer of Van Lear, Henry Kretzer of Columbus, Morris Kretzer of Mt. Morris, Mich., Irving Kretzer of Rome, New York; two sisters, Roberta Lemaster of Mt. Morris, Mich., and Anna Florence Hall of Ulysses; fifteen grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren. The service was officiated by Rev. Justin Williams, with burial following in Lakeview Memorial Cemetery.
