Article in the Floyd Co Heald Newspaper
Newspaper article handed down by Greturde Burga Collins
The Changing of a Name
The German immigrant, of Conrad Amberger, is thought to have come to American
and Virginia about 1717. During his 25 years he lived on American soil ( it
was then British), his name was distorted on every deed or court transaction
in which it was mention. Always " Amburger" was among the names. By the time
his son John (or Johan) began appearing in courthouse records the name became
more stabilized. Perhaps John spoke with an less accent, or perhaps the
County clerk was more learned. However, in John's lifetime, the slow 'anglization'
took place. First an "r" was omitted from Amberger and we had Ambege, Amburge.
By 1760 the "y"was added, and we had Amburgey.
The majority of the family still uses that spelling, but one
brother-against-brother argument over a logging incident, sent a family to
Floyd county in the late 1800's and they began using the surname of Burga, or
Burgy. To this day that family prefers that name. Another, but minor, change
came to another family living in the Breathitt County area, whose name was
changed by an area, whose name was changed by an error of a clerk with the
Social Security System who dropped the l at "e" marking the family Amburgy.
That is how they still prefer to use it.
Article came from the Prestonburg Newspaper. I suspect that Dorothy
Amburgey Griffith wrote this article for the paper.
