                Albert Nichols a mine superintendent of the Royal Collieries Company of Offutt five miles below Paintsville was shot and killed last Sunday afternoon by Charlie VanHoose. Offutt citizens who were in Paintsville Monday say there was no trouble and that VanHoose was under the influence when the shot was fired. They said the men were friendly during the day and that they can not account for the shooting.

                Miss Nichols, the daughter of the dead man was here on Monday and said that her father had left their home in the afternoon to fix the water pump at the tipple house and that a few minutes after he left home he was shot and killed. The ball, she said. entered her fathers back and directly through his heart.

                The remains were shipped to Wellston, Ohio for burial Monday. Mr Nichols was for three years mine foreman for the North East Coal Company at Whitehouse and that two years ago went to Offutt where he was in charge of the operations there. VanHoose was employed by him as a  track foreman and his daughter said there was no trouble between them as far as she could learn. She also stated that Van Hoose a few days previous to the killing the man had a fight with the son of the dead man and that VanHoose administered a severe beating to the boy but that the father had not in any way interfered in this fight,

                VanHoose left the scene of the shooting immediately and was not yet arrested. Nichols was one of the most popular men in this section, having been connected with the mines for the past five years.
