James Hogan was born April 22, 1752 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia and died February 18, 1811 in Garrard County, Kentucky. James Hogan was in the Revolutionary War, and served in Capt. Pettus’ Co of Taylor’s Regt.of VA January to July, 1780. He was a member, with his brothers William and John, of Daniel Boone’s second scouting party into Kentucky. Because of his service in the Revolutionary War, he received a number of land grants in Rockcastle, Jessamine, Laurel, Garrard and Scott counties. According to James’ Revolutionary War records, he immigrated to Kentucky in 1781. He owned and operated the first ferry in Garrard County. James established the ferry in 1785 to bring Garrard County products to his tobacco warehouse across the river at the mouth of Hickman Creek, in what is now Jessamine County.
He appears in the 1810 Garrard Co, KY census.

“my wife Elizabeth; my son James; my daughter Betsey; my daughter Rebeckah; my daughter Polly; my deceased daughter Catey’s four children: William Moss, James Moss, John Moss, and Sally Moss and her husband Mason Moss”, to keep the land until the youngest of my four grandchildren is 18 years of age; then land to be sold and divided equally between the 4 children of daughter Catey; my daughter Sally; my son John; my son Samuel, and my son William Hogan.”
Petitions of the Early Inhabitants of Kentucky to the General Assembly of Virginia, 1769 to 1792
That your Petitioner at the request and solicitations of a number of the Inhabitants in the Kentucky District has provided himself with a Boat, Hands &c for the purpose of keeping a Ferry across the Kentucky River from Lands of his own in Lincoln County to his Lands in Fayette County at the mouth of Hickmans Creek where the publick Warehouses are ordered to be erected. Your Petitioner therefore prays this Honorable House to pass an Act for establishing the same a publick Ferry and fixing the rates of Ferriage. And whereas the keeping of a Ferry across the Kentucky River will be attended with more trouble and inconvenience than is usual on Rivers of that size owing to its peculiar situation & its being fordable generally six or seven months of the year your petitioner is induced to ask your Honble House for such as Augmentation to the general rates of Ferriage as may enable him to attend and serve the publick faithfully--
I Levi Todd Clerk of the County aforesaid do certify that James Hogan did legally advertise that he intended presenting this Petition at the ensuing Session of Assembly. Given under my Hand this 13th day of September 1785 --

They were unable to remove the bullet and he eventually lost his mind and committed suicide in the Kentucky River June 1904. His death is listed as June 11, 1904. His oldest son, Jesse, was my grandfather although I never knew him. Sadly, he died relatively young on Christmas Day, 1823. My dad was only 12 years old at that time.
