Release of Slave George by Samuel Eccles - Deed Book C Page 70
At a Court held for Mercer County at the Courthouse in Harrodsburg on Monday the 7th day of May 1832. The following writing signed Samuel Eccles was this day produced into Court and proved by the oaths of James F Lillard and Joseph Rice, two subscribing witnesses thereto, to wit I, Samuel Eccles, of Mercer County Kentucky Do hereby release, acquit, and discharge the bearer George, from all further service to me or to my heirs, hereby declaring, that said George is a free man, being the son of Leah, otherwise called Laney, who was born in the State of Pennsylvania in the year 1782 after the passage of the act of the Legislature of that state, abolishing slavery, & servitude for life, the said Leah otherwise Landy, was brought to Kentucky by the late Capt Garret Darland & her son, George, was given to my wife by her father, the said Garret Darland, to serve until he George arrived to the age of twenty eight years, that being the construction then given to the Legislative act of Pennsylvania. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 27th day of April A.D. 1832

The boy George named in the above Instrument, is about twenty eight years of age, 5 feet ten or eleven high, of a dark complexion & rather slender.

I, Henry L Edrington, Clerk of the county court for the county aforesaid, Do certify that on the 7th day of December 1835 the foregoing certificate of Freedom from Samuel Eccles to George was presented in Court and ordered to be recorded. In testimony whereof and that I have recorded the same together with the certificate of Thomas Alled Jr Clerk for Mercer County Court, and George W Thompson, presiding Justice of the Peace of said County, I have hereunto set my hand this 11th day of December 1835
