Nathaniel R. Moore
(1827-1892)
Born in Kentucky in 1827, Nathaniel R. Moore, married Nancy Jane Moore (no
former relation) in Hickman County, November 9, 1847, Nancy Jane Moore was born
in Tennessee in 1826. The daughter of Thomas N. Moore and Elizabeth Tarver.
While marriage consents were filed for both the bride and groom, records thus
far have only reflected a copy of Elizabeth Tarver Moore’s consent. This
leaves Nathaniel’s parentage open for speculation.
The new marriage for Nathaniel and Nancy Jane brought instant responsibility.
Nancy Jane's father, Thomas N. Moore died, August 11, 1847, shortly before their
marriage. Nancy Jane’s two younger brothers joined the household and was
raised by Nathaniel. Howell L. Moore born 1836, married Mary E. Vaughan,
November 4, 1857. Melvin Byrd born 1843 married Elizabeth McDowell, November 13,
1869.
The Children of Nathaniel and Nancy Jane Moore are: William T.(1849), Pernella
A. (1851), Frondonia B. "Donie"(1853) became the second wife of James
H. Jordan, marrying in late February or early March 1879, in Graves County.
Elbert W. (1855), Howell P. (February 16, 1857). Sarah Frances
"Fannie" (December 1861), married Fleming Clay Rawley on May 16, 1878
in Hickman County. Eliza Jane (August 5, 1865) married Thomas Alford Frensley,
June 25, 1885 in Anna, Union County, Illinois. Agrippa Frestia " "Grippa"
(February 13, 1868) married Nelle Bailey of Graves County in 1890.
Nancy Jane died December 1, 1876 at the age of 48. Nathaniel remarried Armity J.
Nance, born in Kentucky in 1850, on August 2, 1877, in Graves County. Their son
Elgin L. was born March 26, 1879. All the children of Nathaniel Moore were
Hickman County births. Nathaniel Moore died in 1892, and court records reflect
possible other minor children.
Nathaniel Moore’s lifetime and court records reflect a strong involvement with
Ira Moore and family. Order Book C, page 59, May 1, 1848, Nathaniel is appointed
surveyor. William Moore, Ira’s son, at his side. Deed Book H, page 388,
Nathaniel holding mortgage for money due from Abner Moore (Ira’s son). Deed
Book H, page 202, December 21, 1857, Nathaniel serving as security for
outstanding debts of Ira Moore. Deed Book K, page 477, December 14, 1859,
Nathaniel purchases land from Absolum Moore (Ira’s son). Guardianship, October
7, 1872, page 340, of Oscar Buler Moore, born January 22, 1862, the son of Oscar
F. Moore (grandson of Ira Moore) to Nathaniel R. Moore.
Ira Moore married Phoebe Farmer in Union County, Ky. September 4, 1818. Ira
Moore shows up on Hickman County Tax Records in 1828. The Census of 1830 states,
Ira, wife, one male 60/70 and 7 children. Four males and three females all
between the age of newborn and 10.
Research to date is ongoing, and future hope is that the speculation concerning
Nathaniel R. Moore’s parentage will be resolved.
