Revolutionary War Pension Application of John Slavin State of Kentucky County of Garrard |
On this 20th day of November 1832 John Slavins, aged 75 years, a resident citizen of the county aforesaid personally appeared before me, O. Terrill, a Justice of the Peace in and for the county of Garrard, being too weak and infirm to attend the Court and who being first duly sworn according to Law, doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed the 7th June 1832. That he engaged in the service of the United States as a drafted militia man in the county of Rowan, North Carolina for three months as a Revolutionary soldier in the year of Gates defeat under Capt. Samuel Reed. His Major was by the name of White. Lock was his Colonel and Rutherford was his General. That he was first marched to Salsbury to rendezvous in the aforesaid state of N. Carolina, and from thence to the Cheron Hills, thence near to Camden in South Carolina where General Gates was defeated by the British. He was in that engagement and having served out his time, he was regularly discharged. He has no documentary evidence of his services, having long since lost his discharge, but can establish his service by a living witness of high reputability, Ebenezer Dickey of Simpson County, Kentucky. That some short time after the expiration of his aforesaid service (to wit) in the year of --------- he volunteered as soldier in the same County of Rowan (spelled Roan in original document), North Carolina under Capt. John Brickerstaff, who was authorized to raise a company of Rangers for three months, and was marched to the frontiers of North Carolina near the head waters of Catawbee, and after serving some portion of the time, the company was allowed to disperse and return to their respective homes, holding themselves however in wait to march again any moment when called upon. That they were very soon again called out and the service of his time, he served under Capt. Simmons. His Col. was by the name of Graham, and he was attached to Genl. Rutherford’s Brigade. He was in no battle of great importance during his last three months service, but his company and another company commanded by Capt. Pouge, defeated a party of Tories low down in N. Carolina at a place called the Raft Swamp, and that night after their victory, returned back to the army, and having again served out his time, was regularly discharged but has no written evidence of the same, but he can also prove this tour of duty by the witness referred to. He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension except the present, and declares his name is not on the Pension Roll of the agency of any state. Sworn to and subscribed the day and year aforesaid. John Slavin In Testimony whereof I have hereto set my hand and seal this 20th day of November 1832. O. Terrill, J.P. I certify Oliver Terrill, signature to the foregoing declaration is a ------- on that he is a Justice of the Peace and one of the County Court of Garrard County, Kentucky, which is a court of record.
