Newspaper Clipping Regarding Garrard County WWI Soldiers

The Lancaster Record

Newspaper clipping came from scrapbook of Susan Waldridge Hurt, wife of Elijah Hurt. Contributed by Sandra Hurt Norris.

Benjamin Wood - The honor of being the first man called from Garrard County for service in the National Army went to Benjamin Wood. For a number of years, Ben has dispensed soda to the thirsty, and there is no more popular boy in Lancaster. It is indeed an honor to go first in the battle of the world for democracy.

William B. Mason, Jr. - Probably the first Garrard County boy who will see active service in foreign waters will be William B. Mason of Lancaster, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Mason. He is at this time awaiting orders to proceed to European waters, having volunteered for service on a Submarine chaser. He is at present at Norfolk, a member of the Naval reserve, and has finished his course of training there. “Billy’s” many friends wish him all success, and hope for his safe return.

Stanley Herron - A telegram from the War Department a few days ago brought the announcement to Mr. and Mrs. Luther Herron of this city that their son, Stanley Herron was in France, well and happy.

This was quite a surprise to the family as well as the friends of young Herron, for none of the them knew that he was to be sent “somewhere in France” so early. Mr. and Mrs. Herron have three sons now in the service. Their oldest son, Sam, enlisted several years aso and is now stationed in the Phillippines. Sterling is in a Southern Cantonment and expects and is anxious to go to the front in a few months.

A letter from Stanley to his parents, states that he is in the best of health and made the trip across without an accident, all of thich he says was a great experience and one that he would not have missed for the world. The letter was dated December 25th, and in it he said that he was billed for a big Christmas dinner on that day. He is with the Sanitary Detachment of the 16th U. S. Infantry, and says he likes his job better every day. In speaking of his visit to the Old Cathedral in London, he says: “Today I visited the Old Cathedral in London. It was a wonder. I saw things that I had never dreamed of seeing or that no one could imagine, nothing but cripples in every city. The people in the United States do not realize what this war is.”
